Ronde Van Vlanderen

The Iconic Ronde van Vlaanderen, or Tour of Flanders cycling challenge, proved to be a gruelling test of endurance and skill. Held amidst relentless heavy rain, riders faced daunting conditions throughout the day. The weather added an extra layer of challenge to an already demanding course, making for an epic battle against the elements. The famous cobble sections along the way were made hazardous with mud and crazy cyclists trying to battle their way to the top!

One of the defining features of the Route van Vlaanderen is its treacherous cobbled climbs, which have become legendary in the world of cycling. Among these, the Oude Kwaremont stands out as the longest climb, stretching 2.5 kilometres with an average gradient of 3% and a maximum incline of 11%. Despite its relatively moderate gradient, the cobbled surface and length make it one of the toughest climbs in Flanders. I had one rider cut me up on the steep muddy section and take a barrier down with him which caused a bit of havoc!

The Mur in Gerrardsbergen was a great quad tester. I had to pick up one fallen rider part way up who fell in front of me having slipped on the greasy cobbles. other than a dented ego from being pulled up by a woman he was fine…I think!

However, the true test of strength and determination comes with the ascent of the Koppenberg. This infamous climb boasts a punishing gradient of 9%, with sections reaching 22% at its maximum, over its 682-meter length. The cobbles are unforgiving, and the narrow, poorly paved road adds an extra layer of difficulty. Climbing the Koppenberg is not just a physical challenge but also a mental battle, requiring unwavering focus and determination.

Despite the harsh conditions and challenging terrain, the Route van Vlaanderen is a well-organized event. Rolling roadblocks help to keep participants safe and ensure a smooth flow of traffic over the 100-mile course. This allows riders to focus on the task at hand – tackling the demanding route and conquering each climb one pedal stroke at a time. It’s a day to be on the bike, not in a car!

For cyclists, the Route van Vlaanderen is more than just a race – it's an experience that immerses them in the rich cycling culture of Flanders. Riding through the picturesque countryside, battling the elements, and conquering legendary climbs, participants forge memories that will last a lifetime. Despite the challenges thrown in all around the course, there's a sense of camaraderie among riders as they share in the triumphs and tribulations of the journey. Watch out for plenty of falling cyclists, water bottles and random bits of bike and kit which have given in to the cobbles along the way. A top tip is to make sure you tighten your water bottle cages before taking this on!

Completing the Route van Vlaanderen was all about pushing my mental and physical limits, and embracing this iconic cycling route. I’ve never been so exhausted that I forgot to collect my medal, as did Steve! We had to cycle back to the finish to collect it!

Huge thanks to Steve and Elmy Cycles for setting me up with the right kit, a well-serviced bike and just being the best!

Fancy taking this on in 2025? Take a look at the very informative, We Ride Flanders website.

Bike of choice - Ridley Kanzo on 38mm tyres on 50-60psi - created some drag on the road sections but a little more (welcome) comfort and grip on the cobbles! Available from Elmys - click here
